My mom watched the Indy GP because I was at the race. She’s done the same for a couple F1 races and nothing long term came of that, but my parents split up e ons ago and racing was always my dad’s interest so that wasn’t surprising. But...she’s suddenly an Indycar fan - to the point where she’s texting questions during pre-race coverage when I had no idea she was planning to watch. She’s asking about tires and rain strategy and yellow versus red flags and she has favorite drivers and everything. She wants to go to the next race we attend.

All I can say is, good job Indycar!

Subtitle improvements. No all track yellows. Why? No front wings busted or rear pods broken off that would of caused a yellow. . No flat induced wrecks either. It made a better race.

Yeah. I was also a fan of no track limits at COTA.

IndyCar has grown and improved so much the last 5 years.  Seeing it find an audience and growing really gives me hope that that american motorsports can get out of NASCAR's shadow again.

Indycar manages to be technical yet also very accessible to new viewers. Their coverage team does a great job of explaining the technical side of things in a way new viewers can understand without boring long time fans.

F1 on the other hand is now so complex that you simply can't explain it during the TV coverage.

I remember watching the first IMSA/WEC double header at COTA. WEC enforced track limits while IMSA just said "have at it boys, just be aware the AstroTurf is slippery and that kerb over there is probably going to break stuff". John Hindhaugh HATED the no track limits thing and it was hilarious to watch him complain about it through both races (IMSA had run first so he was praising the limits through the whole WEC race).

I have personally bored her to tears explaining F1 stuff that she didn’t ask about to begin with (qualifying tire strategy, for example). We haven’t gotten into too much detail with her with Indy besides roughly  explaining how Newgarden won Detroit. There’s been so much good racing that we haven’t needed to!

It was really weird having to put her on my no contact list to avoid spoilers for Road America.
